Every year, thousands of young people go into college English having already been told they failed. Foothold exists to change what they believe about themselves, and then their grade.
Why it's different
Most revision apps are built for students chasing a 9. This one is for the student who needs a 4 and doesn't believe they can get it.
So the feedback is built around confidence. It starts with what you did well, aims one step up and not ten, and never uses fail language. The practice is short, because attention is short. And you can talk your answers, because for many students writing is the barrier, not thinking.
The goal is a pass. Not a perfect essay.
Where we are
Foothold is in a proof-of-concept stage. The marking is being checked against experienced teacher marking before any pilot, and a pilot with one resit class is planned so we can see what it really does.
